I am a baker. A baker with aspirations to one day be a pastry great. That pretty much sums it up (simple, I know). However, if you’re just a wee bit interested in learning a little more about my journey then keep on a keepin’ on and read some more.
Here goes, a few years ago I made a pretty big life decision. I was finally going to do it. I was finally going to pastry school, a dream of mine for some time. I was living in San Francisco and while I enjoyed it immensely, I was craving a bit more simplicity in life and less go, go, go thus leading my search for pastry schools beyond the borders of California. Originally from Nebraska, it didn’t take long for a small school in Austin to pique my interest. Everything just seemed to click…the school fit, the city fit and next thing I knew I was enrolled and set to start my program.
Then my family was hit with a bit of a bomb. My mom, my rock, the center of our family was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. I will never forget that day. That was the day all my plans were put on hold. That’s one thing you should know about me…my family comes first, above all else…always. After spending six weeks at home I headed back to SF and decided to stay there for a bit longer before ultimately deciding Omaha was the place I needed to be, especially in light of my mom’s health situation.
Fast forward to today—my mom is out in Seattle right now with her fiancĂ© where she received a cord blood transplant and I’m at home in Omaha holding down the fort. I’m planning to attend a pastry program here in Omaha once I return from being my mom’s caregiver in Seattle for a few months and am eager to start. I’m still adamant about becoming that pastry great!! And that’s why you are reading all this…I’ve decided to blog about my new journey. Most of the stuff you’ll see will be about yummy (or in some cases not-so-yummy) recipes I make, but I can almost guarantee some other chitter chatter is bound to make its way on here. So, sit tight, hold on and enjoy reading—I know I’m looking forward to “baking” my destiny!!
